Rylan Jones accounted for four touchdowns – three rushing, one passing – and rushed for 93 yards on seven carries as Hampton Middle School trounced Johnson County Middle School 44-8 on Thursday afternoon at J.C. Campbell Stadium.
“Penalties have killed us all season,” said Junior Bulldogs head coach Brandon Jones. “We cleaned up some of those things tonight. It’s good to see the guys step up after a loss. As a coach, that’s what you want to see.”
Johnson County’s opening drive ended in a fumble, recovered by Hampton’s Nate Devlin, and the Bulldogs proceeded to cap off an eight-play scoring drive with a 67-yard pass from Jones to Gabe Vines for a 6-0 lead after the two-point run failed.
The ‘Dog increased their lead in the second period on a 30-yard scoring run from Jones. Isaiah Tilson added the two-point run for a 14-0 Bulldogs advantage. The Longhorns answered with a five-play, 40-yard drive, highlighted by a 31-yard run from Brody Golden.
Quarterback Nathan Bumgardner tossed a pass to Camden Johnson for the two-point conversion, making it a 14-8 contest. The ‘Dogs scored quickly as Vines returned the kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown to make it 22-8 after a Tilson conversion scamper.
“Vines is 6-2, and when he gets stretched out, he is going places,” Jones said. “It’s his first year of football but we hope to continue getting him better. We still have plenty of work to do but I think we’ll get there.”
Bumgardner was picked off by Tuff Parlier on the next Longhorn possession, and Colton Hughes cashed in the turnover with a six-yard scoring run. The conversion run failed, and Hampton led 28-8 at the half.
In the third period, Jones scored on a 15-yard romp, with Devlin cashing in the deuce for a 36-8 Hampton lead. After a Johnson County punt, Jones scored on a 35-yard run, with Dylan Lamb scoring the conversion for the final margin of victory.
“We have worked on hitting all week,” Jones said. “We got out hit last week in our loss to Cloudland and I wanted to take it to Johnson County this week. We got some tackles for loss and forced a couple of fumbles, got a couple of interceptions so I was proud of the effort.”
