The Gathering at Sycamore Shoals State Park, the Fall Knap-In at Fort Watauga, and English Country Dancing are all scheduled for next weekend.
The Tennessee Sons of the American Revolution at Fort Watauga will have its Annual Gathering at Sycamore Shoals Saturday, Sept. 14, at 10 a.m. The Gathering will be in honor of the Overmountain Men and their victory over loyalist forces at the Battle of Kings Mountain. The 244th anniversary of the Gathering at Sycamore Shoals will be celebrated with a memorial service and a ceremonial wreath laying.
Also on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. the Fall Knap-In at Fort Watauga will be held.
Knapping is the art of making stone tools, and the Knap-In is the park’s celebration of Tennessee Archaeology Week. Skilled craftspeople will be on site to make arrow points, spear points, and other early survival tools.
There will also be a demonstration of bow and arrow and atlatl throughout the day.
English Country Dancing will take the stage Sunday from 1:30 to 4 p.m. Sponsored by the Sabine Hill Society, the afternoon will include the opportunity to learn dances from the early 19th century.
Dancing was a very popular pastime in early America. Beginners and seasoned dancers alike are all welcome. The event is open to anyone, with or without experience or a partner.
Those attending will meet in the Visitors Center.
Admission to all events is free.
