Nellie Elenora Baker Lingerfelt, 89, of Johnson City, was called to her Heavenly Home on August 31, 2024 from her earthly home. She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Sarah Jane Tolley of Hampton; grandson, Christopher J. Whitehead; special friend/cousin, Minerva Reed; and siblings, Daisy Davis, Hazel Wagner and Ray Davis.

She is survived by her six children, Linda Ray (Stephen), David “Dag” Lingerfelt (Tracy), Fred “Tommy” Baker, Landon Lingerfelt (Cynthia), Janie Headrick-Richardson, and Carolyn Whitehead (J.R.). She was Mamaw to 20 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; and many others who claimed her as Mamaw, all of whom she loved dearly.

Nellie was a born again Christian and a member of College Park Freewill Baptist Church. She loved singing hymns to Praise her Lord Jesus Christ. She retired from Levi-Strauss. She was a hard worker and great provider for her family. She did volunteer work to help others in the church and community. Her hobbies included writing happy songs, gardening, cooking, canning, quilting, crocheting and traveling. She also loved air travel, buffets, farmers markets, thrift stores, amusement parks, zoos, flea markets, the beach and enjoyed this all with family and her friends. She did not like Carrot Cake.

A Service to Celebrate the Life of Nellie Elenora Baker Lingerfelt will be conducted at 7 p.m. Wednesday, September 4, at Memorial Funeral Chapel with Pastor Gary Whitehead officiating. Graveside services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Thursday, September 5, at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be grandsons and great-grandsons. Honorary pallbearers will be Jimmy Graybeal, Shane VanAllen, Bobby Davis and Allen Boling. Also, special people who showed extra love and kindness, Aunt Gracie Whitehead, Bobby Jack Davis, Shelby Malone, Sue VanAllen, Peggy Palmer, Ashley Caldwell, Janie Caldwell, Allen Boling, Judy Davenport, Bueford Stanley, Danetta Oliver, Cayla Jefferies, Baby Boy Tornado, MeMaws Jessica, NP Audrey Laney, Medical Care LLC, Janice Woodby, and her special friends, Bertha Swepson and Jimmy Graybeal. The family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, prior to the service.
