Sycamore Shoals State Park will celebrate the Overmountain Men in September with the first of the events on Saturday, Sept. 14, beginning at 10 a.m.
The Tennessee Society Sons of the American Revolution will gather at Fort Watauga in honor of the Overmountain men and loyalist forces at the Battle of Kings Mountain. The 244th anniversary of the “Gathering at Sycamore Shoals” will be celebrated with a memorial service and a ceremonial wreath laying ceremony.
The following weekend, September 21-22, the Overmountain Men will muster at Sycamore Shoals. Events on Saturday will begin at 10 a.m. and continue through 4 p.m. Sunday events will be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The weekend will feature living history demonstrations, displays, and presentations during the encampment of the Overmountain militia before the Battle of King’s Mountain in 1780. Admission is free.
The 50th anniversary of the OVTA Watauga River Crossing by members of the Overmountain Victory Trail Association will be held Sept. 25. Marchers will cross the Watauga River at Sycamore Shoals just as the Overmountain militia crossed 244 years ago. Following the crossing, the public is invited to join members of the OVTA inside Fort Watauga as they share the story of the Campaign to Kings Mountain and the patriot march that turned the tide of the American Revolution.
The 2024 Annual March will begin with the muster on September 25 at Fort Watauga and ends on October 7 at Kings Mountain with the Battle of Kings Mountain.
September 26 events will include the Rev. Doak’s sermon at 9 a.m. at Sycamore Shoals. Marchers will leave Fort Watauga heading toward Shelter Rock in Roan Mountain on their mission looking for Major Patrick.
