Sycamore Shoals State Historic Park has scheduled several events for September, including guided tours of two historic homes – the Carter Mansion and Sabine Hill.
Tours of the Carter Mansion will be held on Sept. 3 and 12 at 10 a.m., and on Sept. 17 at 1:30 p.m. The Carter Mansion, Tennessee’s oldest frame house, was built between 1775 and 1780. It is located at 1031 Broad St. The tour will include some history of the Carter family and the mansion.
Registration is required, and there is a fee. The cost is $10 for adults, $8 for ages 65 and older, and for veterans and active military; and $5 for children 17 and under.
Tours of Sabine Hill will be held on Sept. 5 and 10 at 1:30 p.m., and on Sept. 19 at 10 a.m. The Sabine Hill House was built by Mary Patton Taylor, widow of Brigadier General Nathaniel Taylor. The house is described as one of the finest examples of Federal architecture in Tennessee.
An added feature of the September tours is an exhibit on Early American death customs and mourning traditions. The cost is $10 for adults, $8 for ages 65 and older, and for veterans and active military; and $5 for children 17 and under.
Other events in September include the Gathering at Sycamore Shoals on Saturday, Sept. 14, at 10 a.m. The Tennessee Society Sons of the American Revolution will honor the Overmountain Men and their victory over Loyalist forces at the Battle of Kings Mountain. The 244th anniversary of the Gathering at Sycamore Shoals will be celebrated with a memorial service and a ceremonial wreath laying.
The main event of the month at the park is the annual Overmountain Muster at Sycamore Shoals on Sept. 21-22, a weekend of living history during the encampment of the Overmountain militia before the Battle of Kings Mountain in 1780. The weekend will include historical demonstrations, displays, and presentations.
The 50th anniversary of the OVTA River Crossing will be Wednesday, Sept. 25, when marchers will cross the Watauga River at Sycamore Shoals, just as the Overmountain militia crossed 244 years ago. Following the crossing, there will be stories inside Fort Watauga about the campaign to Kings Mountain and the Patriot victory that turned the tide of the American Revolution.
All OVTA events at the park are free and open to the public.
