Cyclone girls take second in inaugural Iron Mountains Invitational; boys sixth

The Elizabethton High School girls cross-country team came within a whisker of capturing first place in the inaugural Iron Mountains Invitational at Winged Deer Park, but in a tiebreaker, they fell just short to Dobyns-Bennett.
Vella Nave, who brought a storied career with her from T.A. Dugger, captured the individual title for Coach Matthew Campbell’s squad as the freshman recorded a time of 18:31 in the meet. With this being the first-ever event, it also established Nave’s time as the meet record.
The Lady Cyclones had three more girls medal in the event, with Helen Hackett covering the course in 19:24, which was good enough for a fourth-place finish.
Freshman Jane Hackett finished in 12th place for the Lady Cyclones, clocking in at 20:59.5. Madeline Isaacs was just 13.3 seconds behind Hackett, running a 21:13.8 to collect a 14th-place finish.
Jasey Hyatt’s time of 21:52.8 placed her in the top 20 runners, as Hyatt captured 17th place.
Other Lady Cyclone finishers included Madeline Schumann (27th), Ashleigh Hyatt (32nd), Grace Artz (39th), and Amberlin Grindstaff (43rd).
The Lady Indians took first place, followed by Elizabethton, with Morristown West and Providence Academy taking third and fourth, respectively. West Ridge closed out the top five.
In boys’ action, the Cyclones finished in the middle of the pack with a sixth-place finish out of the 11 teams participating.
William Snodgrass was the top finisher for Elizabethton, as the junior covered the course in 17:01.9, which was good enough for an 18th-place finish.
Cooper Chinault and Cooper Jack had back-to-back finishes for the Cyclones, as Chinault edged Jack at the finish line by a mere 9.2 seconds to finish 20th and 21st, respectively.
Other boys’ finishers for the Cyclones were Jacob Jenkins (54th), Louis Trivette (56th), Wesley Taylor (113th), and Joubran El Helou (116th).
Jefferson County took the team title, finishing ahead of Dobyns-Bennett. Tennessee High, Morristown West, and Providence Academy finished third through fifth, respectively, ahead of the Cyclones.
