Elizabethton High School’s football program, affectionately known as the Cyclones, boasts a storied legacy that has solidified its place in Tennessee’s high school sports history. From its humble beginnings to recent triumphs under the leadership of Coach Shawn Witten, the Cyclones’ journey is a testament to dedication, skill, and community spirit.

The Early Years: Laying the Foundation

The Cyclones’ story began in 1924 under their first coach, C.A. Kyle. The following year, A.E. Choate took the reins, maintaining a roughly .500 record, a solid start for the program. E. Niles Brown, coaching from 1926 to 1947, established a winning culture, achieving an unofficial record of 126-61-12. His standout achievement was leading the Cyclones to their first state championship in 1938 with a 12-0-1 season, along with securing six conference titles.

Mid-Century Success: Building on Foundations

John Treadway’s tenure from 1950 to 1956 saw a record of 43-22-8, further establishing the team’s strength. Although Dwight Haynes faced challenges with a 7-13-1 record over two seasons, the foundation for greatness remained. Tom Pugh (1959-1961) and Claude Holsclaw (1961-1963) contributed to the program’s resilience despite ups and downs.

The Rider Era: A Dynasty is Born

Dave Rider, one of the most influential figures in Elizabethton football, coached the Cyclones from 1976 to 1988 and 1990 to 1999, amassing a remarkable 173-79 record. His leadership brought numerous conference titles and deep playoff runs, instilling values of discipline and teamwork. Rider’s legacy set a high standard for future coaches.

The Modern Era: Witten’s Leadership and the Return to Glory

Shawn Witten, a 1999 Elizabethton High graduate and multi-sport athlete, took over the program in 2007. Witten’s coaching philosophy, influenced by his grandfather Dave Rider, emphasizes hard work and excellence. Under his guidance, the Cyclones achieved a perfect 15-0 season in 2019, winning a Class 4-A state title—their first since 1938. Witten’s tenure includes a 163-50 record over 17 seasons, with back-to-back state titles in 2019 and 2020, and a stellar winning percentage of 74.69.

Key Players: The Heroes of the Cyclones

The Cyclones’ success is also attributed to standout players like Ethan Thomas, who holds records for most career touchdowns (77) and 6,436 rushing yards. Logan Birchfield set a record for most consecutive extra points (62). Bryson Rollins and Tennessee Titans Mr. Football Troy Parker Hughes have also made significant contributions.

Rivalries and Achievements

The Cyclones have a storied rivalry with Greeneville, leading the series with 42 wins out of 79 meetings. Under Witten, Elizabethton has consistently outperformed rivals like Sullivan East and Science Hill, showcasing their dominance.
