A Serendipitous Start

Larry’s journey into officiating began unexpectedly at an elementary school game in Shady Valley. Attending the game as a spectator, he was asked to help officiate due to a shortage of officials. This experience ignited a spark in him, leading him to approach Ralph Stout, the TSSAA commissioner at the time, about becoming a referee. With Stout’s encouragement, Larry embarked on a career that would span over four decades.

Rising Through the Ranks

Larry started as a football official, bringing his keen understanding of the game and his athletic background to the field. A few years later, he expanded his repertoire to include basketball officiating. Over the years, he honed his skills and earned a reputation for his fairness, consistency, and calm demeanor under pressure. His expertise and dedication did not go unnoticed. Larry officiated numerous district, regional, and sub-state games, becoming a familiar and respected figure in the Tennessee sports community. His ability to maintain control of the game and ensure fair play made him a favorite among coaches, players, and fellow officials.

State Championships and Leadership

Larry’s career reached new heights when he was selected to officiate in state championship games. He worked four state championships in football, including serving as the head referee in the 1999 season. In basketball, he officiated four state title games, three in boys’ basketball and one in girls’ basketball. These high-stakes games showcased Larry’s exceptional officiating skills and his ability to handle the pressure of the biggest stages. Beyond his on-field achievements, Larry also took on leadership roles within the officiating community. He served as the president of the Region 1 basketball officials for 13 years and the football officials for four years. His leadership and mentorship helped shape the careers of many young officials, ensuring the continued excellence of officiating in the region.

A Lasting Impact

Larry’s influence extends beyond the games he officiated. Many players he oversaw have gone on to play in the NBA and NFL, a testament to the high level of competition and talent he encountered throughout his career. Since the 2011-12 season, Larry has been a TSSAA basketball supervisor, further contributing to the development and improvement of officiating standards. In recognition of his contributions to sports officiating, Larry was inducted into the TSSAA Hall of Fame in 2013. This honor reflects his enduring impact on Tennessee sports and his commitment to upholding the principles of fair play and sportsmanship.

Personal Life and Legacy

Larry’s professional achievements are complemented by his rich personal life. He was married to his soulmate, Sandra Anita Stewart, for 43 years. Together, they shared a love for travel, hiking, and cycling, exploring the world and enjoying each other’s company. Their relationship was a source of strength and joy for Larry, grounding him through the highs and lows of his career. Tragically, Sandra passed away in December 2023, leaving a profound void in Larry’s life. Her memory, however, continues to inspire him, as he carries forward the values and love they shared.

Mentorship and Future Generations

Larry’s commitment to mentoring younger officials is unwavering. He understands the importance of passing on his knowledge and experience to ensure the future of sports officiating remains bright. His guidance has helped many aspiring referees navigate the challenges of the profession and develop their own careers.
