The search for Victor Birchfield, a Carter County man reported missing by his family on June 21, is ongoing with assistance from law enforcement agencies in South Carolina.

On June 21, a woman reported to the Carter County Sheriff’s Office that her father, 61-year-old Victor Birchfield, had been missing since June 19. Birchfield is described as a white male with grey hair and hazel eyes, approximately 5 feet, 6 inches tall, and weighing around 170 pounds. He was last seen on June 19 in Elizabethton, Tenn., wearing an orange or red shirt, grey basketball shorts, leather shoes, and black socks. He is believed to be traveling in a silver 2004 Toyota 4Runner with Tennessee tag 070BKZV, which has noticeable rear damage. According to family members, Birchfield has a medical condition that may impair his ability to return home safely without assistance.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation issued a Silver Alert for Birchfield on June 21 following the report from his family. A confirmed sighting of Birchfield’s vehicle was reported in the Clemson, S.C., area, prompting collaboration between the Carter County Sheriff’s Office and South Carolina law enforcement agencies.

“Our officers are continuing to investigate all leads and information that we receive regarding Mr. Birchfield’s whereabouts,” Carter County Sheriff Mike Fraley said. “We are working with other law enforcement agencies in South Carolina along with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation on this case.”

“At this time, there is no information or evidence linking the investigation into the disappearance of Mr. Birchfield with the investigation into the escape of inmate Billy Fletcher, who walked off a work detail on June 20,” Sheriff Fraley continued. “Our officers are investigating every lead we receive in both of these separate cases, and we will provide further updates to the public when we have concrete information to release.”
