River Riders rally to defeat Doughboys in thrilling comeback

JOHNSON CITY – On Thursday night, the Elizabethton River Riders rallied from a 4-1 deficit with a seven-run sixth inning to secure a 10-8 victory over the Johnson City Doughboys at Cardinal Park.

Johnson City scored three first-inning runs against Riders starter Christian Pencek, with Kyler Proctor hitting a triple to left field, scoring Chase Bloomer. Braden Spano and Austin Lemon also contributed RBIs, giving Johnson City (10-9) an early 3-0 lead. The Riders (8-12) responded with a run in the third inning when shortstop Carlos Irizarry singled and scored on an RBI single from Kade Huff.

In the bottom of the fifth, Proctor singled against Riders reliever Spencer Powell and scored on an RBI hit from Carson Kerce, extending the Doughboys’ lead to 4-1. The score remained the same until the sixth inning when Cole Torbett and Jayden Loblinger opened with singles, and Brady Picarelli reached on an infield error to load the bases.

Irizarry’s sacrifice fly brought home one run, and Tanner Waldrop’s three-run homer made it a 5-4 contest. The hit parade continued for Elizabethton as Huff and Kain Collins each singled after a James Woody II walk. Woody scored on Collins’ hit, and Kyle Torbett’s single brought home Huff and Collins for an 8-4 Riders lead.

In the seventh, a Waldrop triple brought home Picarelli, who walked to open the inning. The Doughboys scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh on walks to Joey LaMattina and Bloomer, and Proctor collected his third hit of the game, scoring LaMattina. A Spano groundout scored another run to make it a 9-7 contest.

For the game, Torbett finished three-for-five with one RBI, while Waldrop was two-for-five with four RBIs, and Huff was also two-for-five with one RBI. Powell (1-0) earned the win, pitching the seventh and giving up one run on two hits with one strikeout.
