Charles “C.J.” Morton, 60, of Lenoir, N.C., passed away Saturday, May 25, 2024, at Amorem Hospice of Valdese, N.C.

He was preceded in death by his step-mother, Charlotte Morton; father, Wally Morton; and a brother, Joey Braswell.

C.J. retired from the City of Lenoir, having worked as a garbage pick-up driver. He also was a wrestler for Smokey Mountain Wrestling. He loved his dogs and enjoyed working and going to see the races at Bristol Motor Speedway.

Those left to cherish his memory are his mother, Mary Hamby, of Elizabethton; one brother, William D. Braswell Jr., of Elizabethton; daughter, Sarah, of Johnson City; three sisters, Maude Morton, Mary Ann Brewer and Gerry Letcher, all of Elizabethton; and special nephew, Douglas William Braswell of Elizabethton. Several other nephews also survive.

A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 2, in the Edens Cemetery, Johnson City. Friends may also call at the residence of his mother at any time. Those who wish to attend the graveside service are asked to meet at Hathaway-Percy Funeral Home at 10 a.m. Tuesday to go in procession to the cemetery. Those who prefer memorials in lieu of flowers may make donations to St. Jude Children’s Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
