Sunbeams

The other morning, as I was driving at sunrise in East Tennessee, I witnessed a beautiful scene. The sun was rising over the mountains, piercing through the fog, and casting streams of sunlight across the road. For a brief moment, the road was dark, but then the sunlight would break through the fog and flood the landscape with brilliant light. It was a wonderful sight. I was so moved that I pulled over to let my car be filled with that sunlight. God provides that sunlight. In Ecclesiastes 11:7, God’s word says:
Light is sweet,
and it pleases the eyes to see the sun.
Feeling the light that God sends is incredibly warming. There’s an old children’s church song some of you might know called “Jesus Wants Me for a Sunbeam.” The chorus goes:
A sunbeam, a sunbeam,
Jesus wants me for a sunbeam;
A sunbeam, a sunbeam,
I’ll be a sunbeam for Him.
Sometimes, people don’t see God’s light until they see it in us. There’s nothing like God’s creation showing His glory, but we are God’s creation too! We can be the sunbeam in someone’s life. Many times, we go through dark days and never think we can light up someone’s life with God’s love within us. It can be as simple as a quick conversation where you shine God’s light into their life. I tried to do that with a worker at McDonald’s the other day. She seemed to be a person with special needs. I asked her name, and she lit up, then brightened my day by telling me how old she was and how long she had worked at McDonald’s. Behind her glasses, she was a beam of light in my life that morning.
