Gilbert Howard Vines Sr., 77, of Elizabethton, Tenn., passed away on Saturday, April 20, 2024, at Hermitage Health Care Center of Elizabethton. Gilbert was born in the Siam Community of Elizabethton to the late Dewey Vines and Vertie (Stines) Whaley. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Norman Vines, Bob Vines and Toney Vines, and one sister, Martha Guinn.
Gilbert retired as a machinist at Colorworks of Elizabethton and was a member of Harvest Baptist Church. He loved to talk to anyone and everyone and loved the Lord. He also loved fishing, watching his grandchildren play sports and playing games and just spending time with his children and grandchildren.
Those left to cherish and remember Gilbert’s many memories include his beloved wife of 57 years, Hilda Sheppard Vines of the home; his children, Gilbert Vines Jr. and wife Tracy of Elizabethton, Christy Vines of the home and Heather Elliott and husband Mack of Elizabethton; five grandchildren, Allison Rajewski and husband Rich of Chicago, Ill., Megan Elliott of Elizabethton, David Elliott of Bainbridge Island, Wash., and Zachary and Kyleigh Elliott, both of Elizabethton; one great-granddaughter, Alathia Elliott of Elizabethton; one brother, Dan Vines and wife Angela of Jonesborough; and one sister, Vicky Snyder and husband Dan, also of Jonesborough. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
A celebration of Gilbert’s life will be conducted at 5:30 p.m. Friday, April 26, at Harvest Baptist Church, 309 East F Street, Elizabethton, Tenn., with Pastor David Elliott and Pastor Jim Johnson officiating. A private disposition will be conducted at a later time. The family would like to thank his special nieces, Amy, Jeannie, Alena and Tari, for their kindness, help and support during Gilbert’s illness. Also to Hermitage Nursing Home for all their love, care and support shown to Gilbert and his family during his stay with them.
