The Elizabethton Lady Cyclones found a mixed bag of results in a weekend tournament in Pikeville, Kentucky as Elizabethton finished 2-2 for their efforts.

The Lady Eagles of Johnson Central jumped out front first in the tourney opener for the Lady Cyclones scoring three runs in the top of the third and then tacking on four more in the top of the fourth to seal the victory.

EHS found the offense hard to come by as the Lady Cyclones managed only two hits in the contest.

Mollie Johnson and Piper Bennett collected those base hits for Coach Ken Hardin’s team. Johnson collected the one RBI.

Lela Byrd was cuffed with the loss tossing 3.2 innings of softball allowing seven runs on five hits while striking out six.

Wolfe County …. 0

The Lady Cyclones bounced back nicely in game two as they earned a 2-0 victory over the Lady Wolves collecting seven hits in the game.

Elizabethton got on the board in the fourth inning as Lilly McDuffie roped a one out double to get things rolling. Courtesy runner Grace Whaley raced home when Adrian Heading took a 1-1 pitch to right field with two outs to take a 1-0 lead.

Lela Byrd added an insurance run in the top of the fifth when she pounded a pitch over the left field wall to make it a 2-0 game.

With the lead, McDuffie hurled a complete game allowing only three hits while striking out six Lady Wolve batters with no walks.

Emma O’Quinn also doubled in the game for the Lady Cyclones while leading EHS with two hits in the game.

Pike Central, KY … 1

Powered by the one-two punch of Mollie Johnson and Lela Byrd, the Lady Cyclones rapped out 12 hits on their way to a 10-1 win over Pike Central, KY.

Johnson led the hit parade for Elizabethton collecting four RBIs on three hits including a three-run home run.

Mikinna Blackwell also collected three hits in the game knocking in one run. Centerfielder Adrian Heading contributed with a pair of hits in her three plate appearances.

Meanwhile, Byrd was on fire from the pitching circle as she whiffed 11 batters and walked only three. Pike Central managed only one run in the game on three hits while working Byrd for three walks.

Byrd, Sadie Williams, Jozey Reece and Grace Whaley each added a hit apiece in the contest.

Looking to get a measure of revenge against the Lady Eagles from the first loss of the tournament, the Lady Cyclones saw a late lead evaporate as Johnson Central came back to gain the win 5-3.

After taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the second, the Lady Eagles managed to pull even in the bottom of the third and edge ahead 3-1 heading into the sixth inning.

Elizabethton put together a rally in the top of the frame to pull even.

With one out, Adrian Heading singled to get things going and advanced to second on an error by the Lady Eagle third baseman.

Lilly McDuffie laced a single pushing Heading to third. A sacrifice fly from Makinna Blackwell scored Heading.

Grace Whaley singled to center field allowing pinch runner Addy Campbell to race to third base. Mollie Johnson doubled to center field chasing Campbell to the plate to make it a 3-3 game.

Unfortunately, the Lady Eagles scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 5-3 lead to take the victory with a one-two-three top of the seventh.

Heading had two of the five Elizabethton hits in the game with Johnson McDuffie, and Whaley accounting for the remaining base hits.

McDuffie took the loss from the pitching circle as she gave up five runs on 10 hits while striking out three Lady Eagle batters.
