Hubert “Herb” Orfield, 89, of Elizabethton, Tenn., passed away Tuesday, March 26, 2024, at Greystone Health Care Center. He was born in Johnson City to the late Christopher Honaker Orfield and Sally Dunn Orfield.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Glenna Orfield; brother, C.H. Orfield; sister, Louise Richter; and step-son, Allen Thomason.
Herb had worked at Seaver’s Bakery, Beaunit Fibers and retired from the Waste Water Treatment Center in Florida. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church where he loved to sing in the choir. For many years he was part of the Betsy Squares. He loved to square dance and clog and was a huge fan of Tennessee Football.
Those left to cherish his memory are his daughters, Sherry Hicks of Kingsport, Margaret Ryans and husband Larry of Kingsport and Billie Grindstaff of Murfreesboro; one son, Bob Orfield and wife Vicki of Georgia; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and three step-daughters, Frances Salyer, Glenna Clark and Sharon Thomason. Several step-grandchildren, step-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews also survive.
A funeral service to honor the life of Herb will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 30, in the Sunset Chapel of Hathaway-Percy Funeral Home with Pastor Tim Nelson officiating. The family will receive friends between the hours of 1 and 2 p.m. Saturday, prior to the service. The committal and entombment will follow in the Mausoleum of Peace at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be selected by family and friends. The family would like to give a special thanks to American House Assisted Living of Kingsport and the staff at Greystone Health Care Center for all their loving care given to Mr. Orfield during this difficult time.
