The 65th Annual Roan Mountain Spring Naturalists Rally has been scheduled for April 26-28.

The event is packed with exciting events ranging from outdoor exploration opportunities to evening indoor programs at the Roan Mountain State Park Conference Center. Evening programs will include the History of the Pisgah and Cherokee National Forests by Marci Spencer and Magic in the Dark: Nature’s Magic Markers: Fireflies and Glowworms by Sharon Mammoser.

The Friday night schedule also includes a Night Walk at 9 p.m. led by Cade Campbell and Moth Viewing at 9 p.m. led by Larry McDaniel.

Saturday field trips include: Birds of Roan Mountain, Beginning Birding, Salamanders, Wildflowers, Foraging and Ethnobotany, Geo Adventure to Peg Leg Mine, and a Hike to Jones Falls.

Saturday Conference Center activities from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. include Fossil Casting with Mick Whitelaw of the ETSU Dept. of Geology; a nature slideshow by Tracy Crampbell; and a flint knapping demonstration by Bob Estep. Nature Jeopardy hosted by Sharon Mammoser is scheduled at 12:30 p.m.

Field trips at 2 p.m. include Wildflowers, Mosses and Liverwort, Aquatic Insects as Water Quality Indicators, Hampton Creek Cove Hike, Wildlife Tracking, Tech in Nature, and Geology Paleo-ecology Hike.

The Saturday evening program at the conference center by Sharon Mammoser will be on fireflies and glowworms.

The Sunday schedule calls for field trips at 9 a.m. and includes Birds of Hampton Creek Cove, Doe River Gorge, and Salamanders.

Field trips scheduled at 2 p.m. include Butterflies and other Insects and Twin Springs Ephemerals and Plant Ecology.

A buffet dinner will be served Friday and Saturday evenings and a bag lunch will be provided Saturday.
