In year two of Elizabethton Cyclones boys soccer head coach Doug Schultz tenure the team is on an upward trajectory.

“We had a winning record, but we lost in the first round of the district tournament,” Schultz said. “Our goal is to win the state and that will be our goal every year. I think we have a team that can do that, but we have to get past Greeneville first of all. We all know they are the one to beat but I think we have gained some experience from last year. We have seven seniors on this team and they are all leaders.”

The seniors are Jonathan Espinoza, Riley Vernon, Will Churchill, Luke Whaley, Conley Stevens, Roman Shelby and Tylar Jenkins and they will be counted on to provide scoring and leadership.

The Cyclones are a young team with two juniors and 16 underclassmen that are looking to grow into team roles and will be an integral part of the growth of the squad. Schultz is not shy about playing his young players saying, “We have five seniors that will play a significant role in the team and they are good decision makers but I have a lot of faith in my young players and they will get playing time. I really want to send a message to our community to come out and support the team. I think we have an exciting sport and we are very competitive and we feel that when fans show their support it makes the team excited to play and show what they can do.”
