Florence Odom Harmon, 100, Newland, N.C., went to be with her Lord, Saturday, March 2, 2024, at The Waters of Roan Highlands, Roan Mountain, after an extended illness.

A native of Avery County, N.C., she was  born January 24, 1924 to the late Vernal W. and Nina Mae Davis Odom.

Mrs. Harmon was retired from the Tar Heel Micha Plant. She loved spending time with her family and reading her Bible. She was a member of the Newland Church of Jesus Christ where she loved going to church prior to her illness.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Johnny Harmon; four children, Johnny Ray, Sammy Pete, David and Shirley Franklin; one great-granddaughter, Brielle Elizabeth; three sisters, Gladys Calhoun, Beulah Turbyfill and Mildred McKinney; and two brothers, Roy Odom and V.W. Odom.

Survivors include her children, Priscilla (Dwayne) Letterman, Elizabethton, Bobby Harmon, Johnson City, and Dale (Sherry) Harmon, Elizabethton; three sisters, Alta Goins, Wilma Campbell and Ruby Shell; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were conducted at 7 p.m. Monday, March 4, at Memorial Funeral Chapel with Pastor David Atkins and Pastor Edward Davis officiating. A graveside service and interment was at 11 a.m. Tuesday, March 5, in the Fork Mountain Cemetery, Newland, N.C. Pallbearers were selected from family and friends. The family would like to express a special thank you to the staff of The Waters of Roan Highlands, her second family, for all the love and support given to her during her stay there. The family received friends at the funeral home from 6 to 7 p.m. Monday, prior to the service. Family and friends assembled at the funeral home at 9:45 a.m. Tuesday to go in procession to the cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-9959.
