In a game of momentum swings, the Buffaloes of West Greene outpaced the Bulldogs of Hampton, claiming third place in the District 1-2A consolation game.
The overtime period hinged on a pair of free throws by West Greene’s Brocke Winstead and a missed open three-point attempt by the Bulldogs, giving the Buffaloes a two-point lead they maintained until the end.
The Bulldogs surged ahead in the first quarter, taking a 20-10 lead fueled by eight points from Hayden Campbell and six from Geno Carrico. However, the Buffaloes mounted a comeback in the second quarter, outscoring Hampton 17-10 to close the gap to 31-27 at halftime.
Both teams exchanged runs in the third quarter, resulting in a seesaw battle that saw the Bulldogs leading 46-40, thanks in part to Dylan Trivett’s timely five points.
The fourth quarter saw a back-and-forth exchange, culminating in a three-pointer by West Greene’s Braden McCamey, giving the Buffaloes a tie at 56 all and pushing the game into overtime.
In the extra frame, the Buffaloes surged to an early lead, but Hampton fought back to a tie with under a minute left. However, a foul by Hampton with 17 seconds remaining sent West Greene’s Brocke Winstead to the line, where he secured the win with two successful free throws.
Coach Ned Smith called a timeout to devise Hampton’s final play. Despite a wide-open three-point attempt by Michael Anspaugh that rimmed out and a fall-away putback attempt by Geno Carrico, time expired with the Bulldogs falling short.
The Bulldogs will embark on their first-ever Region 1 AA game on Saturday at Alcoa, with game time set for 7 PM.
