Two long win streaks were extended on Saturday night at Snavely Gym, with the Hampton Lady Bulldogs winning their 11th consecutive game and the Bulldogs winning their eighth straight contest. The Bulldogs defeated the Unaka Rangers 77-53, while the Lady Bulldogs triumphed over the Lady Rangers 40-25 in non-conference basketball action.
Bryce Fagan came off the bench for the Bulldogs and scored a game-high 16 points, earning praise from head coach Ned Smith who said, “Bryce came off the bench and played well. Unaka has a pair of big guys in the post, but we matched up with them. Hayden (Campbell) was good for eight rebounds, and Chance Point had five, and Michael Anspaugh had seven assists.”
The Bulldogs (18-9 overall) took a 27-15 first-period lead and extended that advantage to 40-25 by halftime. They continued their momentum in the third quarter, entering the final period with a 58-33 lead. Senior Dylan Trivett scored 13 points, with fellow senior Geno Carrico adding 12. For Unaka (10-18), freshman post John Hardin scored a team-high 15 points, with Mason Wilson contributing 12.
In the girls’ game, Hampton defeated Unaka 40-25. Faye Carrico led with a game-high 13 points, and senior post Taylor Berry secured 12 rebounds while scoring just two points. The Lady Bulldogs (19-9) took a 12-2 lead in the first period and extended it to 24-11 by halftime.
“We felt that Faye was a mismatch for them, and we wanted to exploit that,” Lady Bulldogs head coach Dewayne Humphrey said. “Unaka’s defense made it tough on our guards, so we took the game inside. This was a physical game, and when you get into the tournament, the refs tend to let you play that way, so we needed this to get ready.”
Sophomore Hannah Smith and senior Piper Helle each scored six points to support Carrico’s effort. For the Lady Rangers (6-20), Keyona Hague scored eight points, with Lauren Lund adding six points to the Unaka scoring ledger.
