On a night when senior post Hayden Campbell was honored for reaching 1,000 points scored, the Hampton Bulldogs won their second contest in a row and fifth in the last six with a 62-57 non conference win over University School.
On the girls side the Lady Bulldogs dominated this game from the opening tip and secured a 70-19 blowout win.
“I have had such a blessed career at Hampton,” Campbell said. “I couldn’t have done any of it without my teammates and my coaches. My coaches have taught me so much and helped me prepare for everything.”
Campbell had a game high 23 points in this contest and while the Bulldogs (12-9 overall) never took charge of the game, they held off every Buccaneers rally. The ‘Dogs and Bucs were tied at 20-20 at the end of the first period with the pace of the game fast and furious.
“UH had been shooting lights out, but we adjusted and pressed,” Bulldogs head coach Ned Smith said. “We stepped up defensively and we may have tired them out a little bit.”
Hampton took a slim 36-33 lead at the half and extended to a 49-45 lead after three quarters. Campbell opened the fourth quarter with three deuce buckets and a free throw as the Bulldogs opened up some breathing room with a 56-45 advantage.
The Bucs (14-6 overall) did not falter however running off eight straight points with Patsy Boynewicz and forward Brady Weems each connecting a trey and A.J. Murphy throwing in a reverse layup to cut the ‘Dogs lead to 56-53.
Michael Anspaugh hit a pair of free throws and Chance Point hit a deuce to put Hampton up 60-53 with just under two minutes left in regulation. Murphy dropped in a pair of free throws and Pete Boynewicz added a deuce but the ‘Dogs finished with free throws to close it out.
