Bulldogs sweep past Unaka

Senior guard Michael Anspaugh fell two assists short of a triple double on Tuesday night at Van Huss / White gymnasium scoring 21 points with eight assists and 10 steals as the Hampton Bulldogs toppled non-conference rival Unaka by an 84-55 tally.

On the girls side the Lady Bulldogs took a 65-35 win behind 12 points from Piper Helle and Brea Hicks and 11 points from Macy Henry.

“He had a total solid game,” Bulldogs head coach Ned Smith said. “We had a lot of kids come out in the second half. We got in a little foul trouble but we overcame it. As a team we had 23 assists and we shared the ball. A big key for us tonight was our bench. They just kept coming and we wanted to push the ball and wear them down.”

Hampton led 18-6 after the first quarter and 32-23 at the half. Hampton (3-4 overall) went on a 17-4 second quarter run after the Rangers closed to within 16-14.

The tide turned further in the third period when the ‘Dogs defense turned up a notch and Hampton scored 34 third quarter points to make the contest a moot point taking a 66-41 lead into the fourth quarter.

Mason Wilson took top scoring honors for Unaka with 17 points with Connor McKinney adding nine points. Senior post Hayden Campbell scored 20 points with eight rebounds and two blocked shots and Bryce Fagen added 13 points to the Bulldogs stat sheet.

Hampton 65-35

The Lady Bulldogs opened with a 12-5 first period lead and was never threatened as Lady Rangers had 17 turnovers and could not compete with the height advantage of Hampton.

Hampton (6-5 overall) won its third in the four games with Piper Helle and Brea Hicks leading the way with 12 points each.

“It was a good team effort,” Lady Bulldogs head coach Dwayne Humphrey said. “We were anxious to get back on the floor. We ended up with 20 steals which I was proud of. We wanted to be the aggressor tonight and I think we did that.”

The Lady ‘Dogs led 33-18 at the break and carried a 48-26 lead into the fourth quarter. Guard Lauren Lund was the game top scorer with 15 points for the Lady Rangers (2-8 overall) but Unaka dropped its sixth straight game.
