On Tuesday evening at Bayless Gymnasium Happy Valley’s Lady Warriors held on to take a 46-40 win over University High while the Warriors fell hard to the Junior Buccaneers 84-45.
The Warriors (1-6 overall) had 23 turnovers in the loss and head coach Shane Williams said, “That has been our Achilles heel so far this season. We had back-to-back games where we had 25 turnovers in each game so I guess we are improving. It’s hard to win when you turn the ball over but I’m tickled that they stayed in the game and didn’t quit.”
UH took a 25-16 lead after one period and led 41-27 at the halftime break. The Bucs really poured it on in the third period scoring 31 points to take a 72-45 lead into the final quarter. Senior guard A.J. Murphy had a game-high 23 points with Pete Boynewicz adding 18 and Mason Croley finished with 17 points.
For HV, Senior Joseph Sowards had a team-high 10 points with Dylan Furr and Austin Nickles each tallying eight points. The Warriors were shut out in the final period.

The Lady Warriors looked like they would run away with this game outscoring UH 15-4 in the opening period but the Lady Buccaneers had a 15-7 second period to make it a 22-19 game at the half.
Anna Wells scored six of her team-high 12 points in the second stanza. The third period was a defensive struggle with neither team scoring double figures but HV extended its lead to 31-23 going into the final period.
Marcida Moore opened the fourth quarter with a deuce that was answered by baskets from Wells and Lemy Ortiz to make it a 33-27 contest. Ashlynn Sommers scored eight of her game-high 13 points in the fourth quarter and head coach Dana Hill said, “She really did. She knocked down some key shots. In the first half, she was reluctant to shoot but we kept telling her that she had to shoot those close-in shots.”
Sommers hit back-to-back deuces to make it a 37-27 contest but free throws from Vania Ortiz and a bucket from Chandley cut it to 37-31 with 3:37 remaining. Sommers answered with a putback of an offensive rebound to give HV a 39-31 lead.
The Bucs then got baskets from Ortiz and Wells to shave the lead to 39-35 but the Warriors got three free throws from Sommers, and Cayden Anderson to make it a 42-35 game. Chandley fired in a triple for UH but the Warriors finished with five-of-eight from the line to close out the win.
