Richard Stephen Lyons, 76, of Johnson City, Tenn., passed away on Wednesday, November 1, 2023, at Johnson City Medical Center. He was born to the late Henry F. “Boots” Lyons and Rhoda Frances Townsend Reeme.
Richard was born in Johnson City, but spent the majority of his life in Washington, D.C. He retired from General Services Administration as a carpenter. He loved carpentry so much and was so knowledgeable that he was able to build most of his home himself. In his spare time, he enjoyed hunting, fishing and being outdoors.
Richard was a member of the IOOF Columbia Lodge #10 and was the finder of the Clara Barton Office of Missing Soldiers, now a museum in D.C. He also was a member of Powder Branch Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings, Judith “Judy” Irene Lyons Dale, Sandra Kay “Sandy” Lyons Adams and Charles Robert “Bobby” Lyons, and several aunts, uncles and grandparents that have gone on before him.
Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Sarah Strappello-Lyons; brother-in-law, Rick Strappello (Connie); sister-in-law, Lois Strappello; and three aunts, Carolyn Shelley, Linda Killen and Reba Townsend. Many cousins and other family members also survive.
A service to celebrate the life of Richard Stephen Lyons will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, November 5, in the Sunset Chapel of Hathaway-Percy Funeral Home with Mr. Gene Cornett officiating. The family will receive friends between the hours of 1 and 2 p.m. Sunday, prior to the service. The graveside service and interment will follow in procession to the Lyons Cemetery, Elizabethton.
