Hopwood Christian Church will host its annual quilt show October 27 and 28.
Hopwood Church is located adjacent to the Milligan University Campus.
This year’s show theme is “Holy Comforters,” and will feature over 100 quilts, which will be draped across the pews.
“The quilts are out of our attics, hot off our sewing machines, and some are from friends and neighbors,” said Elizabeth Banks of Hopwood.
Along with the show, there will be a craft and bake sale, with all proceeds going to the church building fund to make the church handicap accessible.
The hours of the quilt show are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 27, and 10 to 4 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 28.
The sanctuary of Hopwood Christian Church is one of the oldest congregations in the area, its almost 200-year history ties it to a number of historical figures and events.
According to organizers of the quilt show, in the 1930s, the women of Hopwood raised money to buy the church’s beautiful stained glass windows by coming together and making quilts and selling quilts.
In more recent years, the quilt shows provide a chance to showcase some local art as well as a nice nod to the church’s heritage. On display at this year’s show will be a wide variety of quilting types and patterns.
The exhibition is staffed by church members and quilters ready and able to answer questions about the quilts on display or about the art and history of quilting in general.
