Buccaneer freshman defender logs all 180 minutes in first two matches for the Bucs
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Nico Kross (Heidenheim, Germany) has wasted little time making an immediate impact on the pitch for the Buccaneer men’s soccer program.
On Tuesday, the ETSU freshman defender was named Southern Conference Defensive Player of the Week as the league office announced its first weekly awards for the 2023 men’s soccer season.
Cross, who has played all 180 minutes in the first two ETSU matches this season, helped the Bucs record a clean sheet in the 1-0 victory over Georgia Southern last Thursday inside Summers-Taylor Stadium. The Buccaneer defense limited the Eagles to just two shots on goal in the match.
On Monday, the Blue & Gold faced a much larger test as ETSU went up to Lexington to take on No. 3 Kentucky. The Buccaneer back line held the Wildcats to three shots for the entire 90 minutes with only two coming on goal.
Kross is the first Buccaneer non-goalkeeper to earn SoCon Defensive Player of the Week honors since Oct. 29, 2019 when Merveil Bilomba took home the award.
Kross and the Bucs return to action this Friday when ETSU hosts North Carolina at 7 p.m. inside Summers-Taylor Stadium.
