Buccaneer midfielder named SoCon Player of the Week
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – After scoring three goals in two games last week for the ETSU women’s soccer team, junior midfielder Sinoxolo Cesane (Capetown, South Africa) was named Southern Conference Offensive Player of the Week as the league office announced its weekly awards on Tuesday.
Cesane, who had totaled two goals in 38 career games for the Blue & Gold entering the season, recorded the game-tying goal last Thursday at then-No. 25 Tennessee, while posting her first-career brace in the 3-0 win at Gardner-Webb on Sunday.
At Tennessee, Cesane notched the game-tying goal in the 49th minute, marking just the fourth time the Bucs scored a goal against Tennessee in eight career meetings. For the match, Cesane accounted for three of ETSU’s seven shots as she played 66 minutes against the Vols.
On Sunday, Cesane helped the Blue & Gold bounce back into the win column in a big way. The Buccaneer midfielder scored a pair of second-half goals as ETSU cruised to a lopsided win over the Runnin’ Bulldogs. Cesane, who played 51 minutes, scored twice on three shots on goal during the match. The first score came in the 62nd minute, which put the Bucs ahead by two goals, while she put the exclamation mark on the match by finding the back of the net with 18 seconds remaining as ETSU capped off the 3-0 victory. Both goals by Cesane on Sunday were assisted by redshirt freshman Ruby Teixeira (Nashville, Tenn.).
Cesane is the first Buccaneer women’s soccer player to earn SoCon Offensive Player of the Week honors since teammate Kyra Ranvek (Knoxville, Tenn.) received the accolade back on Sept. 14, 2021. Ironically, Ranvek was the last Buccaneer to have a brace in a game until Cesane came through with hers on Sunday. Ranvek’s two-goal performance came in the 2-1 win over MTSU on Sept. 10, 2021.
The Bucs, who sit 2-1-1 through their first four games of the season, cap off a three-game road swing Thursday night at Tennessee Tech. The match is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. ET at Tech Soccer Field.
