Marvin H. Bowers, of Knoxville, went home to be with the Lord on August 15, 2023 at the age of 73. Born in Elizabethton, Tenn., to the late Wesley Garrett and Cordie Rice Bowers, Marvin graduated from Elizabethton High School in 1968. He went on to the University of Tennessee, obtaining his Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering in 1973 and his Master of Science in Environmental Engineering in 1977. His dedicated work ethic made him a sought after employee, and he worked for several prestigious firms in the Knoxville area, including Wayne L. Smith & Associates, Environmental Systems Corp., MCI Engineers, Neely Development Co., Lockwood Greene Engineers and Parson Infrastructure & Technology – eventually retiring from Y-12 National Security in 2014.
Marvin was a member and deacon at First Baptist Concord, where he gave generously of his time and talent. He volunteered for Habitat for Humanity as well. His love of travel, photography and fishing were all passions, but his most cherished accomplishment was his family and spending time with them. Marvin will always be remembered for his unwavering devotion and support to his family and Christian walk with the Lord as an engineer and businessman.
In addition to his parents, Marvin was preceded in death by sister-in-law, Johnnie Lou Hartley.
He is survived and will be deeply missed by his beloved wife of 52 years, Sherry Bowers; son, Curtis Bowers and wife Krista; grandson, Evan; son, Marc Bowers; brother, Robert “Bob” Bowers and wife Brenda; sister-in-law, Gina Beth Oliver; brother-in-law, Bill Hartley; nieces and nephews, Jennifer Garner, Heather Tauscher, Denise Davis, Brian Hartley and Joe Hartley; several great-nieces and nephews; and other extended family and friends.
The family will receive friends at First Baptist Concord’s main sanctuary on Sunday, August 20, from 2:30 until 3:30 p.m. The funeral service will follow at 3:30 p.m. with Rev. Danny Hood and Mr. Jeff Rowe officiating. Marvin will be interred privately at Happy Valley Memorial Park in Elizabethton. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in his memory to First Baptist Concord, Missions Ministry or Knoxville Habitat for Humanity.
