Mary Ellen Williams, 94, of Elizabethton, Tenn., went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Monday, August 14, 2023, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital in Elizabethton. Mary Ellen was born in Johnson City, Tenn., to the late David and Orlia Strickland Gourley. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Eugene Williams; her sister, Hattie Mae Ellis; her niece, Roseann Williams; her nephew, Randy Williams; and several sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law.
Mary Ellen retired as the president of Grindstaff Chevrolet where she had worked for over 52 years. She was a very active member of Calvary Baptist Church. She served as the church treasurer for many years and was a member of the WMU and the choir. A true servant of the Lord, she was very active with her Sunday School Class and the M&M’s Group and had also served on the bereavement committee for many years. In her spare time, Mary Ellen enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, her friends and going to church.
Those left to cherish Mary Ellen’s memory include her daughter, Vicki (Travis) Johnson of Elizabethton; and two grandsons, Caleb (Karmen) Johnson of Kings Mountain, N.C., and Conner Johnson of Elizabethton. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
A service to celebrate the life of Mary Ellen Williams will be conducted at 7 p.m. Wednesday, August 16, in the Chapel of Peace at Terick Funeral Home of Elizabethton with Dr. Joe Sorah, Rev. Mark Newman and Rev. Matt Swain officiating. Music will be under the direction of Rev. Chris Hughes and wife Tonia. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, prior to the service, or at the home of her daughter.
The committal and entombment will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, August 17, at the Mausoleum of Peace at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Honorary pallbearers will be deacons and special friends at Calvary Baptist Church and her past coworkers at Grindstaff Chevrolet. Those wishing to attend the service are asked to meet at the cemetery at 10:50 a.m. Thursday. Those who prefer memorials in lieu of flowers may make donations in Mary Ellen’s honor to her home church, Calvary Baptist Church, 225 Holly Lane, Elizabethton, TN 37643.
