Raymond Howard Broyles, 82, of Elizabethton, Tenn., passed away on Tuesday, August 1, 2023, at Johnson City Medical Center. He was born in Carter County to the late Henry and Nell (McGee) Broyles. In addition to his parents, he was, preceded in death by five brothers, Fred Broyles, Preston Broyles, Dewey Broyles, Beryl Broyles and Gene Broyles; and a brother-in-law, Dean Sheffield.
Raymond treated everyone with respect and always carried a smile on his face. He always had a positive attitude towards everyone and never had a bad thing to say. His kind personality was only eclipsed by his fantastic sense of humor. He was a very skilled carpenter and retired from North American Rayon Corporation (NAR) after 20 plus years of service. Above all, he loved his wife and family.
Raymond was a member of the Board of Directors at NAR in 1994 and 1995 as a result of being the Union President. He enjoyed listening to country and gospel music, car racing and watching golf. Raymond loved antique cars and after years of love and attention to his prized antique truck, he gave it to his grandson to be fully restored. Sitting and drinking his Dr. Enuf and listening to the radio was usually where you would find Raymond! His family will remember him for his love and devotion to them, watching cartoons with his grandchildren and taking walks to talk and catch up with family and friends.
Those left to cherish Raymond’s memories include his beloved wife, Anna Lee Ward Broyles of the home; his daughters, Regina Ann Guess and husband Arthur of Johnson City and Teresa Jane Aplin and husband Don of Nashville; four grandchildren; three brothers, Floyd Broyles, Haskel Broyles and Conley Broyles; and two sisters, Norma Sheffield and Edith Scalf and husband Larry. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
A service to honor and celebrate Raymond’s life will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday, August 7, in the Chapel of Peace at Tetrick Funeral Home of Elizabethton with Rev. Eric Brown officiating. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Monday, prior to the service. The graveside service will follow at Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be selected from family and friends. Honorary pallbearers will also be chosen from Raymond’s family and friends. The family would like to extend their appreciation to the wonderful team at Hermitage Health Care Center of Elizabethton for their love and exceptional care given to Raymond during his illness.
