STAR CORRESPONDENT
A hot Saturday morning couldn’t deter fans of the T.A. Dugger Jr. Cyclone football team from coming out to Citizens Bank Stadium to take an early look at their team during their annual scrimmage with the Norris Senators out of Anderson County.
Based on the scrimmage, it looks like the Jr. Cyclones could very well claim another conference title as the eighth-grade team outplayed their visitors on the first four possessions of the scrimmage, which featured 10-play drives.
The Jr. Cyclones took the ball first and moved down the field with crispness using a good mix of runs and pass plays to push it over the goal line first. A leaping effort from a Jr. Cyclone defender came up just short after a great grab on the play but the foot was out of bounds.
Norris, on the other hand, found out just how strong the TAD defense is going to be this season as the Senators managed to move the ball to within scoring distance before their first drive came up short as the defense slammed the door to keep the visitors from a taste of the end zone.
Each team made defensive stands on their next possessions, as neither could punch the ball across for another score.
Sixth and seventh graders then had an opportunity to get work in as both ends of the field were used for offensive and defensive possessions.
After taking a water break, the teams returned to the field with a mix of players to close out the scrimmage.
The Jr. Cyclones have another scrimmage scheduled at 5 pm on Wednesday, Aug. 2, at Citizens Bank Stadium against Robinson from Kingsport.
