The Happy Valley High School Golf team is proud to host the 1913 Invitational brought to you by Bank of Tennessee and Carter County Bank on Monday, July 24 which will be contested at the Johnson City Country Club.
Happy Valley along with a field of 15 other schools will compete in the second edition of the event. High school golfers representing Elizabethton, Greeneville, Volunteer, Dobyns-Bennett, Sullivan East, Tennessee, Providence Academy, Morristown West, David Crockett, Tri-Cities Christian, Unicoi County, Rockvale, Chattanooga Christian, Providence Christian and Apostolic Christian will tee things up on the first official day of competition for 2023. The golfers will play on the last remaining A.W. Tillinghast designed course in Tennessee.
Providence Christian comes to Johnson City as the defending TSSAA Division II-A Girls’ State Champion and Dobyns-Bennett girls’ team was a TSSAA Division I-AA team qualifier in 2022. Rockvale was a team qualifier for last year’s TSSAA Division I-AA Boys’ Golf State Championship. Other programs saw individual qualifiers for the TSSAA State Championship a season ago with additional golfers qualifying for their respective region tournaments. That list of region qualifiers includes Happy Valley’s Cayden Anderson for a second straight year which continued the streak of 16 consecutive seasons for Happy Valley to have a Region qualifier on the girls’ side.
“This event features top level competition from across Tennessee and as a coach I am looking forward to seeing the high level of play to start 2023,” Happy Valley golf coach Gene Renfro said. “Serving as tournament director it is exciting to bring in so many state championship caliber programs to a historic and outstanding facility at the Johnson City Country Club.”
Anyone interested in a hole sponsorship for this event please contact head coach Gene Renfro at generenfro@carterk12.net for more information. This event helps the HVHS Golf program run the event and purchase items for the team for the season as their major fundraiser.
A season ago, along with having Anderson qualify for the Region 1-A Tournament, the Happy Valley Girls’ Golf team was awarded a Distinguished Scholastic Achievement Award honor from the TSSAA for the program’s 3.75 GPA for the Fall semester. The Lady Warriors were one of 28 teams across the state to achieve that honor and their GPA ranked 15th. Meanwhile the Boys’ Golf team was a Outstanding Scholastic Achievement Award winner with a GPA of 3.13 for the Fall semester, one of 27 programs statewide with a GPA over 3.0.
