Roger Wayne Hollifield, 80, of Johnson City, Tenn., passed away Saturday, June 24, 2023, at his home following an extended illness. He was born in Shell Creek, Tenn., and was the son of the late Jack and Edna Hollifield.
Roger graduated from Happy Valley High School in 1960 and started his military career with the United States Army. After training he joined the Army Reserves. He was a member of Pleasant Beach Baptist Church, Elizabethton, Tenn., where he served as a deacon and a Sunday School teacher. He was an educator for 30 years. He taught at Elizabethton High School and then began teaching General Building Trades and Welding at Cloudland High School, Roan Mountain, Tenn., before becoming the principal prior to his retirement. He was a Licensed Contractor, Electrician, and Plumber that he did on the side.
Roger was a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association and a former Mason. He loved drag racing, being at the track with his family and friends, riding his motorcycle, and anything outdoors. He loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife, Gwyn Goforth of the home; two sisters, Carolyn Mir of Jonesborough, Tenn., and Janis Felty of Knoxville Tenn.; two sons, Tim Hollifield and wife Anahita of Washington DC, and Chris Hollifield and wife Monica of Elizabethton Tenn.; his step-son, Preston Goforth and wife Holly of Marietta, Ga,; his step-daughter, Lindsay Gibson and husband Adam of Johnson City, Tenn.; one granddaughter, Kaylee Hollifield of Johnson City, Tenn.; and six step-grandchildren, Reece, Austin, Cameron and Holden Goforth of Marietta, Ga., Rylee Jackson of Johnson City, Tenn., and Nathan Gibson of Johnson City, Tenn.
A service to honor the life of Roger Wayne Hollifield will be conducted at 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 5, at Memorial Funeral Chapel, Elizabethton, Tenn., with Pastor Greg Ruston officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home prior to the service from 5 to 7 p.m. or at the residence at any time.
The committal and entombment service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 6, in the Mausoleum of Peace of Happy Valley Memorial Park. Active pallbearers will be Perry Mir, Pamon Mir, Adam Gibson, Sheriff Mike Fraley, Jeff Matherly and Danny Avery. Honorary pallbearers will be Steve Stout, Alan Buckingham, Keith Hensley, Kyle Hollifield, Carter County Rescue Squad workers, County Corner Benny Colbaugh, and all his former students and coworkers. Military Honors will be accorded by the Veterans Honor Guard DAV 39 of Bluff City. Everyone will meet at the funeral home at 9:15 a.m. on Thursday to go in procession to the cemetery. In lieu of flowers, those who prefer may make donations to St. Jude Children’s Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105; the Alzheimer’s Association, 322 8th Avenue, 16th Floor, New York, NY 10001; or to Cloudland High School “Students”, 476 Cloudland Drive, Roan Mountain, TN 37687.
