Eleven champions crowned as 2023 Carter County Omnium comes to an end

After three grueling challenges, including the Roan Groan, time trials, and the Criterium, the 2023 Carter County Omnium sponsored by Carter County Tourism wrapped up Sunday with the crowning of 11 champions in their respective categories.
In the men’s categories, Milligan University rider Trevor August capped his weekend by taking the title in the Pro/1/2 category. August captured the Roan Groan road race on Saturday to help propel him toward the title.
Finishing in second place was Criterium winner Andrew Strohmeyer of Mount Airy, MD, while Stephen Bassett of Knoxville reached the podium with a third-place showing.
Peter Swinand also followed up his Criterium victory on Sunday by taking the title in the Men’s Cat 3 competition. Swinand, from Evanston, IL took the podium with second-place finisher Colin Mathern hailing from Greenville, SC and third-place rider Braden Reitz of Carmel, IN.
Moving to Cat 4, Charlottesville, VA, resident Josh Ott captured the title just ahead of Cameron Cook from Durham, NC. Benjamin Luna took third place as the rider from just across the mountain in Banner Elk, NC, pedaled his way into the top three.
Wil Harrington of Summerfield, NC, took the Cat 5 (Novice) competition, followed by Johnson City’s Halden Vega and Coeburn, VA rider Thomas Salyer.
In Masters 35+/45, Asheville, NC native Alexander Zambrana captured the title. Cincinnati, OH, competitor Eric Bair earned the second-place medal with David Howe from Nashville taking the third spot.
There was only one rider crowned in the Masters 40+ category as Mark McClay of Whispering Pines, NC, took the top spot.
Ryan Robinson of Anderson, SC, took the Masters 50+ victory, while Clarksville’s Paul Carter finished second. Marcus Jones stepped to the podium as the Hendersonville, NC resident secured third place.
Knoxville’s Kent Bostick secured the Masters 60+ category win. Thomas Burridge from Louisville, KY, earned the second-place medallion, while Murfreesboro native Bernard Clincke finished third.
On the women’s side, Mooresville, NC rider Florence Howden took the overall victory in the Women’s Pro/1/2 category. Milligan University competitor Majorie Bemis from Corona, CA, cycled her way to a second-place showing while Salt Lake City, UT resident Katherine Shields mounted the podium in third place.
Jennifer Thornton-Brooks walked away as the champion in Women’s Cat 3 racing as the Boone, NC resident bested second-place finisher Jennifer Malik of Carroll, OH. Mariana Rinaldo from Baldwinsville, NY, riding for Lees-McRae College, took third place in the event.
Finally, in Women 4/5 racing, Shannon Moore from Zionville, NC, took the win followed by fellow North Carolina native Tracie Carson from Asheville. Charlottesville, VA rider Christie Taylor closed out the category in third place.
