Milligan University’s August captures 2023 Roan Groan title in Pro 1/2

Riders couldn’t complain about the perfect weather they had for the 2023 Roan Groan Road Race sponsored by Carter County Tourism, one of the three events of the 2023 Carter County Omnium.
Departing from Cat Island in downtown Elizabethton, the riders made their way along Highway 19E on their way to Carver’s Gap in Roan Mountain as competitors from all across the country sought the title.
In the men’s Pro 1/2 race, Milligan University’s Trevor August won a mad dash to the finish line over Lanier Ash from Goshen, KY riding for Kelly Benefits Strategies Elite as August crossed the finish line in a time of 3:38:20 just ahead of Ash who clocked a time of 3:38:23.
Chapel Hill, NC rider Owen Cole finished third in 3:39:02 representing Velocious Sport cycling.
In Men’s Cat 3, Asheville’s Taylor Delhagen riding for GF Capital Racing defeated Colin Mathern from Greenville, SC representing Supra Performance Devo Team. Peter Swinard riding for Pony Shop Cyclocross Team raced his way to a third place finish. Swinard hailed from Evanston, IL.
Ben Ewert was the winner of the Cat 4 competition as Ewert from Beavercreek, OH out dueled Charlottesville, VA rider Josh Ott to the finish line. Ott was riding for Blue Ridge Cyclery Racing p/b Reynolds. Al Dente Cycling’s Christopher Gates from Columbus, OH finished third.
Cincinnati, OH native Eric Bair captured the Masters 35+/45+ category as the 11elevenCycling rider bested Noah Niwinski from Boone, NC with Boone Velo racing. Asheville’s Alexander Zambrana finished third as he pedaled his Super Squadra pb Applewood Manor bicycle across the finish line.
In Men’s Masters 40+/50+/60+, Ryan Robinson from Anderson, SC raced his Carolina Cycling Team bike to a first-place finish just ahead of Washington, OH rider Corey Hart. Stu Moran riding for Tempo Cyclisme claimed third place. Moran is from Fletcher, NC.
In Men’s Cat 5 (novice), Pisgah, NC rider Walker Shaw pedaled across the finish line for a first place finish. Matthew Lee from Augusta, GA rode his way to second place followed by third-place finisher Ian Simpson from Knoxville.
The Women Pro/1/2/3/4/5 Category was claimed by Mooresville, NC rider Florence Howden who wore the Cardinal Classic Cycling colors. Jennifer Thornton-Brooks from Boone, NC was second while Milligan University rider Marjorie Bemis collected third.
