Carrell Deal Grindstaff, 82, of Elizabethton, Tenn., passed away on Monday, March 20, 2023, peacefully at his home. Carrell was the son of the late Ruby Laughlin and Jesse Smith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Ruby Jean, and his wife of 59 years, Nancy, who passed away on January 2, 2023.
Carrell retired from North American Rayon Corporation when it closed in 1996. He was also a retired farmer and plumber.
Carrell attended Poplar Grove Baptist Church.
Those left to cherish his memory are his children, Cindy (Greg) Johnson and David (Dana) Grindstaff; his grandchildren, Lyndsi Grindstaff, Anthony Johnson and Ryan Johnson; and his Kentucky brothers and sisters, Myrtle (Roy) Morgan, Alex (Ida) Smith, Garfield (Sharon) Smith, Jack (Brenda) Smith, Roy (Lori) Smith and Joy (John) Clouatre. Several nieces and nephews that Carrell thought the world of also survive.
It was Carrell’s wishes to be cremated and a memorial service to honor Carrell’s life will be conducted at Poplar Grove Baptist Church at 3 p.m. Saturday, March 25, with Pastor Eric Wright officiating. The family will receive friends at the church from 1 p.m. until the service hour on Saturday. A burial in the Shoun Cemetery will be conducted by the family at a later date. Those who prefer memorials in lieu of flowers may make donations in honor of Carrell to St. Jude Children’s Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
