Virginia Lee Hughes, 92, of the Powder Branch Community, went home to be with her Lord on Sunday, March 19, 2023, at Sycamore Shoals Hospital. She was born in Elizabethton to the late Ernest Townsend and Irene Campbell Townsend.
Virginia was a graduate of Happy Valley High School, Class of 1948, and later received her associate’s degree from Steed College. She retired from the Carter County School System as a Cafeteria Manager at Happy Valley Middle School.
She was a life-long member of Oak Grove Christian Church, and was baptized in 1945 in the Powder Branch Creek. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, watching soap operas and cooking for her family.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Hughes (who passed away the exact same day on March 19, 1990); three brothers, Dale Townsend, Junior Townsend and Billy Townsend; and two sisters, Rhonda Reeme and Ora Love Deadrick.
Those left to cherish her memory are her three daughters, Kathy Jo Buck and husband David, Karen Blevins and Kelly McLaughlin, all of Johnson City; two sons, Kirk Hughes and Kim Hughes, both of Johnson City; three grandsons, Isaac Pinkston, Russell Hughes and Nicholas Hughes, all of Johnson City; one great-granddaughter, Anslie Pinkston of Elizabethton; and three sisters, Mary Mosley of Johnson City, Carolyn Shelley of Maryville, Tenn., and Linda Killen of Johnson City. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
A funeral service to honor the life of Virginia will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, March 23, at Oak Grove Christian Church with Mr. Jeff Curtis, minister, officiating. The family will receive friends between the hours of 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Thursday, prior to the service. The graveside service and committal will follow at Happy Valley Memorial Park, Johnson City. Active pallbearers will be sons, grandsons and nephews of the family. Honorary pallbearers are men of Oak Grove Christian Church, Gary Blevins and Bud McKeehan. Those who prefer memorials in lieu of flowers may make donations to Oak Grove Christian Church (Benevolent Fund), 436 Jim Elliott Road, Elizabethton, TN 37643.
