Following a month-long study of important events in Black History at Keenburg Elementary School, fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students did an essay contest. The contest was centered around Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have A Dream” speech that occurred Aug. 28, 1963 in Washington, D.C. Students read the speech and highlighted key ideas and phrases. They also listened to audio recordings of the event and watched video footage of the famous speech. After much discussion and debate, students then created an outline for their essays. They also wrote a rough draft and after corrections, a final draft was completed. The essays were reviewed by a panel of Keenburg staff members and winners were selected.
