Emmanuel Christian Seminary at Milligan welcomes Dr. Jennifer Newsome Martin, associate professor in the department of theology and program of liberal studies at Notre Dame University, for the Hayden Lectureship, on March 16. The lectures are free and open to the public.
“We are delighted to have Dr. Martin on campus for this year’s Hayden Lectureship,” said Dr. David Kiger, theological librarian and assistant director of library services. “She brings a wealth of knowledge concerning theology along with the connections between the humanities and theology. These lectures provide our learning community an important space to interact with leading scholars in various theological disciplines.”
Martin is a Catholic systematic theologian and a leading scholar in the study of Hans Urs von Balthasar. Her first book, “Hans Urs von Balthasar and the Critical Appropriation of Russian Religious Thought,” was one of 10 international winners of the 2017 Manfred Lautenschlaeger Award for Theological Promise. She serves on the editorial board of Religion & Literature and the University of Notre Dame Press. Martin has held leadership positions with the Hans Urs von Balthasar Consultation of the Catholic Theological Society of America and the steering committees for the Christian Systematic Theology Unit and the Eastern Orthodox Studies Unit in the American Academy of Religion.
Martin’s lecture series, “On the Art of Seeing: Theological Aesthetics for the Church,” includes:
– “Reading the Bible with Balthasar’s Origen,” 10:30 a.m.
– “Eschatological Desire and the Poets of the End,” 2 p.m.
– “Beauty and the Cross: (Cruciform) Love Alone is Credible,” 7 p.m.
The lectures will be held in the Mildred Welshimer Phillips Memorial Chapel in the B.D. Phillips Building.
The Hayden Lectureship honors the legacy of Dr. Edwin V. Hayden, a prolific minister, writer and editor for the Christian Standard. In 1988, Emmanuel honored Hayden as the first recipient of the James A. Garfield Award for service to the church.
