Officials believe an Elizabethton man who died Sunday when his vehicle struck a utility pole could have suffered a medical emergency before the crash.
Officials said Dayton Ray Stout, 71, was traveling north on Grove Street in a Ford Ranger when the truck veered off the left side of the roadway and collided with a utility pole.
The vehicle sustained moderate damage, and investigators with the Elizabethton Police Department said they believe Mr. Stout suffered from some sort of medical emergency prior to the crash.
The crash was reported about 8:50 p.m. Sunday, in the area of 1116 Grove St. Officers with the Elizabethton Police Department, Elizabethton Fire Department and Carter County Rescue Squad were dispatched to the scene.
First responders found Mr. Stout unresponsive and treated him with first aid and CPR, before he was transported to Sycamore Shoals Hospital. He was declared dead at the hospital.
The incident remains under investigation.
