Girl Scouts of the Southern Appalachians invites troops, former Girl Scouts, family members and supporters to explore the outdoors during the third annual “Reach for the Peaks” fundraiser, sponsored by Home Federal Bank, McCarty Holsaple McCarty and Target One Marketing Group.
The hiking event from March 4-19 coincides with the organization’s founding day and National Girl Scout Week. Registration is open at girlscoutshike.org, and the fees benefit local Girl Scouts and further the organization’s mission to build girls of courage, confidence and character who make the world a better place.
Whether in the mountains or around the neighborhood, participants are encouraged to hike 3.12 miles, in honor of “Girl Scouts’ Birthday,” or March 12, 1912, when the organization was established.
“We’re calling on all community members to Reach for the Peaks again and uplift local Girl Scouts,” said Lynne Fugate, CEO of Girl Scout Council of the Southern Appalachians (GSCSA). “Spring is right around the corner, and there’s no better time to take in the beauty of East Tennessee. Sign up now – every step is one toward a girl’s success!”
Registration fees range from $10 for current Girl Scouts and Lifetime members to $35 for the public. Participants receive a special Reach for the Peaks patch and knapsack. Supporters also can register as a “ghost hiker” with a $20 donation to the council without participating in the hike.
Hikers are encouraged to connect with others on social media using #ReachforthePeaks. Learn more about the fundraiser and organization at girlscoutshike.org.
