At Roan Mountain we house, care for, and educate the public on a variety of native animals. We work under an educational permit from TWRA. Currently, we care for three birds of prey and several snakes! As you can imagine, caring for these animals is costly, as their food and health care is a specialty!
All of our animals are non-releasable for a variety of reasons. We frequently program with these animals and never charge for educational programs when using them. Here is your opportunity to support our educational wildlife program and help us care for these animals!
All donations will go to purchase food, pay vet bills, purchase gloves, tethers, falconry equipment, aquarium bedding, and to improve and build more housing facilities for our non-releasable birds of prey.

Culture & Coffee: Dark Skies at Roan Mountain — 7 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. Meet at the Conference Center. Price is $0/person, $5/person + $5 donation. Register for the event. In 2015, Pickett CCC Memorial State Park and Pogue Creek Canyon State Natural Area earned Silver-tier International Dark Sky Park designation. It became the first state park in the Southeast to gain this prestigious recognition. Visitors can enjoy sweeping, rich views of the night sky similar to those found in many of the Western states.
Achieving this designation required a detailed multi-year process of measurement, evaluation, planning, advocacy and commitment. Join Park Manager Monique Johnson (Cordell Hull Birthplace State Historic Park) and Park Ranger Michael Hodge (Pickett CCC Memorial State Park) to learn more about Dark Skies, why they matter and what we can do to improve viewing conditions in our region.
Coffee & Culture is a new speaker series at Roan Mountain State Park in 2023. Each engagement features a presentation from a subject matter expert on a different topic, and takes place at the Roan Mountain State Park Conference Center. Coffee and light refreshments are provided. The series is free, although donations are appreciated and will be used to fund refreshments.

March 3
Raptors of the Roan — 4 p.m. – 5 p.m. Meet at Park Headquarters. Join us from 4-5 p.m. at the Park Headquarters to delve into the incredible world of raptors — birds of prey we can enjoy here in Roan Mountain. Our owl ambassadors will make a hoot of an appearance alongside our aviary volunteers and park rangers. This program is free and no registration in required. We ask that you do not bring any pets other than required service animals to this program.

March 4
Roan Mountain 2023 Weed Wrangle — 1 p.m. – 5 p.m. Meet at Visitor Center Porch. Register for the event, Join Roan Mountain State Park to take part in a battle against invasive plants! Volunteers and park ranger staff will be working together to continue the battle against non-native Chinese Privet around the Visitor Center area and along the Doe River. This event will start at 1 p.m. at the Visitor Center and end at 5 p.m. Gloves, eye-wear, and tools will be provided by the park. Volunteers are asked to bring good working shoes, clothing for unpredictable weather, a water bottle, and any snacks. In addition to removing invasive privet, volunteers will help to plant native plants into restoration sites to help outcompete the non-native plants in the future.

March 18
Roan Mountain 2023 Spring Hike (Sold Out) — 10 a.m. – noon. Meet at Visitor Center Parking Lot. Price is $0/attendee, $10/donation (not attending), $10/attendee + $10 donation, $20 donation (not attending), $20/attendee + $20 donation. Register for the event. Spring has arrived and with it comes the annual views of active wildlife, wildflowers, and much better weather for hiking! Join Roan Mountain State Park at the Visitor Center from 10 a.m. – noon for a wonderful spring hike along the Moonshine Run Trail. After meeting at the Visitor Center Parking Lot, guests will follow the park ranger to the trail head parking lot by the park cabins area for a 1.2 mile hike along the gorgeous Doe River while enjoying some of our early spring wildflowers. This hike is limited to 20 participants with no cost, but donations to our park will help with current trail planning and construction.
Hikers are encouraged to bring cameras, water, and sturdy hiking shoes. Dogs are welcome on a leash.

Culture & Coffee: The Scots-Irish in Appalachia — 7 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. Meet at the Conference Center. Price is $0/person, $5/person + $5 donation. Register for the event. While many in our region claim Scots-Irish heritage and generally acknowledge the role the Scots Irish played in the settlement and cultural development of the Southern Appalachian region, this presentation will provide a deeper understanding of who the Scots Irish were, where they came from, why they came, how they got here, and how they left their mark on our region.
About the Presenter: Jane MacMorran is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Appalachian Studies at East Tennessee State University where she serves as Director of the Appalachian, Scottish, and Irish Studies Program. She is a former United States National Scottish Fiddling Champion and serves as a judge for Scottish fiddle competitions across the U.S. Jane earned her PhD from the University of Aberdeen (Scotland) in 2018.
