Bulldogs take a pair from Rangers

Hampton marched into Snavely gymnasium on Friday night and showed who is the top ‘dog’ in the conference with victories over Unaka in boys and girls basketball action. The Bulldogs used a 30-point effort from senior guard Cadon Buckles to propel Hampton to an 81-60 win, while the girls held the Lady Rangers to ten first-half points in a 78-32 rout.
Hampton (18-5, 5-0 conference) took a 17-10 first-period lead and, as is their usual trait, opened a 40-28 halftime lead.
“I was proud of the way we continue to share the ball,” Bulldogs head coach Ned Smith said. “We got good minutes off the bench from Geno Carrico. He does whatever we need him to do. He is a starter really, but I like what he gives us off the bench. He’s a team player. We got a double-double from Campbell and everyone played their roles.”
The Rangers (4-19, 1-4 conference) got 34 points from senior forward Landon Ramsey but Unaka was never really competitive in this one as Ramsey got little in the way of scoring support as Joe-Z Blamo scored nine and Logan Lewis had eight points.
Along with his 30-point effort, Buckles contributed six steals and four rebounds for Hampton.
“We knew it would be tough to come here and get a win,” Buckles said. “But I have great team support around me that enables me to do what I do. We executed our offense well tonight and pushed the pace.”
Hayden Campbell scored 16 points for the ‘Dogs and was good for ten rebounds, while Carrico scored 12 off the bench and had five boards. Junior forward Dylan Trivett had his best scoring game of the season with 11 points, including dropping in three treys.

Senior guard Lyndie Ramsey had a slow first half for Unaka with just four points as Hampton (20-1, 4-1 conference) built a 56-10 halftime advantage and cruised to an easy win. Macy Henry had a game-high 23 points with post Taylor Berry adding 16 points and senior point guard Madison McClain chipping in with 13 points.
Ramsey rebounded in the second half to finish with 24 points but no one else on the Lady Rangers (7-16, 1-4 conference) squad could manage more than three points. Alisha Harrell had a trey for her three points and Haley Taylor and Keyona Hague each scored two.
