Remembering the Legend: Dr. Harold Stout

Harold Stout spent thirty-three years coaching, thirty-one on the college level, in Virginia and Tennessee, including Milligan College and ETSU. Stout once said, “I have retired three times and I even coached a prison team.” In his career, Stout won 621 games as a head coach and a winning percentage of sixty-five percent. As he was inducted into the NAIA Coaches Hall of Fame in 1987, he was the 11th all-time winningness coach in the NCAA. He graduated from Elizabethton High School and had a successful college baseball and basketball career at East Tennessee State University. Harold Stout began his sports career as a pitcher for the Bucs, where in his pitching college career, he went 36-4. He was named All-Conference and All-District, as well as received an honorable mention All-America honor from the NAIA. Harold was also a great basketball player. He attended and graduated from ETSU in 1956, Tennessee in 1959 with his master’s and received his doctorate in education in 1974. Stout would coach at Marion High School in Marion, Virginia, for two years before going to the college level. There is where he would be named Coach of the Year thirteen times. His teams were the winners or runner-ups fifteen times in VSAC and NAIA District. At ETSU, he was named Southern Conference Coach of the Year and received the American Association of Baseball Coaches Award (Outstanding Coach) in 1985. He was also a scout for the Cleveland Indians for seven years and he was inducted into the ETSU Sports Hall of Fame in 1986. Harold loved playing in Saltville, Virginia. He once said he had more fun playing there because the town loved baseball and appreciated us playing there. The friends he met there lasted forever and all levels of administration were all class. He was one of the first members inducted into the Carter County Sports Hall of Fame. Stout was born in August 1933 and passed away just after his 84th birthday on August 30, 2017.
