On Monday, December 26, 2022 our precious Mother, Judy Mathews, went home to join her family and her Lord and Savior at the age of 67. Judy was born in Boone, N.C., but had lived in the Poga Community most of her life. Born to the late Martin and Sylvia Hartley Smith, she was also preceded in death by her beloved husband, Floyd J. Mathews II.
Judy was a wonderful and loving mother and a friend to everyone she met. Her smile radiated the love in her heart and will forever be remembered and cherished. Judy had worked as a caregiver and was a longtime member of Stout Hill Church of Christ, where she loved worshipping with her church family and neighbors.
Judy loved her grandbabies, animals, the outdoors — especially sitting by the river and looking at the beautiful mountains that surrounded her home. Judy was an avid collector, enjoyed cooking for her friends and family and especially baking. Judy will be remembered for her giving and caring heart and her kind, wonderful spirit.
Those left to cherish and remember Judy’s wonderful memories include her sons, Alex (Tiffany) Mathews of Poga and Floyd Mathews III, of the home; three grandchildren, Olivia Mathews, Baileigh Mathews and Hannah Mathews; two brothers, Arthur Smith and RV Smith, both of Butler; and a special niece, Donna Smith, also of Butler. Several nieces, nephews, many friends, neighbors and church family also survive.
The family will hold a gathering of remembrance for Judy at 6 p.m. Monday, January 2, at the Stout Hill Church of Christ with Mr. Donnie Cable, minister, officiating. Our family would like to thank Amedysis Hospice for the loving and compassionate care they have given our beloved mother during her illness. Those who prefer memorials in lieu of flowers may honor Judy’s memory by making donations to the Elizabethton Animal Shelter, 135 Sycamore Shoals Drive, Elizabethton, TN 37643. Online condolences may be shared with the Mathews family on our website, www.hathawaypercyfuneralhome.com.
