An Elizabethton man apparently fell down a steep wall on the Doe River overnight Wednesday, slid into the river and drowned.
Elizabethton Police responded about 10 a.m. Thursday to the 200 block of Academy Street, where a body had been discovered in the river.
The man was identified as Roger Markland, 63, of Elizabethton.
Investigators believe that sometime during the overnight hours, Markland fell down the steep river wall into the river in the area near the intersection of Academy and First streets. An autopsy has been ordered and the investigation is ongoing.
Carter County EMA, Elizabethton Fire Department and the Carter County Coroner assisted in the investigation.
