BRISTOL – Freshman Camdyn Garland scored a first half goal for Elizabethton but it wasn’t quite enough as the Lady Cyclones fell 3-1 to Tennessee High in girls soccer action at Stone Castle on Tuesday evening.
EHS (0-3, 0-1 conference) saw senior goalkeeper Morgan Heaton make stops on 13 of the Lady Vikings 16 shots on goal – many of those of the sensational variety.
“Our goalkeeper had a phenomenal game,” Lady Cyclones head coach Lauren Meier said. “She played first rate and we adjusted our defense in the second half and didn’t give up nearly as many shots. Camdyn has had a few goals like that in camp and in scrimmages and she has shown she can get to the ball and put it in.”
Tennessee High scored in the sixth minute on a shot from junior Reese Marshall with an assist from sophomore Lana Lavinder. The Lady Vikings got on the board once again in the 11th minute off a set piece when Aryanna Patterson sent a corner kick into the box.
In the ensuing scrum, Marshall was able to get enough on her shot to eke it last Heaton for a 2-nil Vikings lead. The Cyclones settled back into a defensive posture for several minutes looking to not get beat over the top as THS sent shot after shot at the Cyclone net only to have the defensive back line and Heaton turn them away.
In the 21st minute junior forward Mollie Johnson raced down the sideline to the corner from where she fed Kaiya Simmons across the goal crease. Simmons saw that Vikings goalkeeper Bridget Flaherty was in prime position for the stop so she sent the pass to the far post from where Garland fired a left footed shot into the Viking net.
“That’s her first official goal in a game,” Meier said. “Defensively our goal was to not give up as many shots and we adjusted well in the second half. They had only six shots in the second half and Morgan didn’t have to work nearly as hard in the second half.”
In the second half Heaton stopped a breakaway attempt from junior striker Riley Miller with a beautiful sliding tackle and stop and Flaherty did the same earlier in the half to thwart a great scoring opportunity for Simmons.
In the 53rd minute, after Heaton’s stop of Miller, the Vikings continued to press the attack and Abby Littleton fired a hard shot that Heaton blocked but the rebound got away from her and Patterson drove a shot into the net for a 3-1 THS advantage.
The Cyclones will take on Dobyns-Bennett on Thursday in a nonconference match and Meier said of the early slate of games, “We have a tough early schedule. It’s possibly the toughest early schedule we have faced in a while. But we want to keep the girls encouraged and let them know that in the long run these games will only make us better.”
