River Riders clinch season series in win over Flyboys

The Elizabethton River Riders (22-25) earned a two-game split with the Greeneville Flyboys (26-27) on Tuesday night by a final score of 6-3. River Riders designated hitter Issac Williams went 1-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored.
The win allowed the Riders to earn the win in the season series over the Flyboys, as they now hold a 6-4 record over Greeneville in the 2022 campaign. Elizabethton also moved back within a game of the Flyboys in the Appy League West standings.
Greeneville took an early lead over E-Town in the top of the first. With the bases loaded and two outs, third baseman David Bishop hit a two-run single. Through a half inning of play, the Flyboys led 2-0.
The River Riders got both of the runs back in the bottom of the second inning. After a pair of walks and a popup, first baseman Cayden Phillips singled to left to score shortstop Marcus Sanders. Then, Williams came home on a wild pitch from Caleb Jones to tie the game, 2-2.
The top of the third saw the Flyboys retake the lead. After back-to-back base hits to start the frame, Bishop hit another RBI single, allowing designated hitter Cameron LaLiberte to score. After two and half, Greeneville led 3-2.
Elizabethton got their first lead in the bottom of the sixth. On a full count and two outs, second baseman D’Sean Prinkleton hit a single to center field to bring home Sanders and third baseman Ty Peters. With a third of the game to play, the River Riders led 4-3.
The bottom of the seventh saw the Riders add on two more. Williams hit a deep fly ball to center field for a triple to score left fielder Nelson Smith. On the play, Williams scored as well as the throw back into the infield got away from Greeneville. The Riders now led 6-3, and the score held through the ninth.
The River Riders will now turn the page to begin a series with the Bristol State Liners on Wednesday. First pitch from Boyce Cox Field is set for 6 p.m. Meanwhile, the Flyboys will start a series with the Bluefield Ridge Runners. Game one is set to begin at 5:30 p.m from Pioneer Park.
