Gas leak shuts down portion of West Elk Avenue

Officials have closed a portion of West Elk Avenue after construction crews struck a natural gas line.
Elizabethton Police said crews were working in the 800 block of West Elk Avenue when they struck an 8 inch gas line, causing a “large gas leak.”
The road has been closed between Bemberg Drive and Hudson Drive.
“At this time it is believed that repairs could take the rest of they day,” police said, encouraging residents to avoid the area if at all possible.
