Man fires on deputies before setting mobile home on fire

A life-flight helicopter landed at Hampton High School on Tuesday evening to transport a man who authorities said was injured after he set fire to his house.
The incident took place about 6:40 p.m. as deputies responded to a call at 108 Rittertown Road in Hampton concerning a suicidal man at the home.
“Officers responded and upon arrival spoke to an individual through the door,” said Carter County Chief Deputy James Parrish. “He fired approximately two to three rounds into the floor of the trailer. The officers moved away from the door and he fired several more rounds, with one eventually coming through a window and then set the trailer on fire.”
Parrish said the man stayed in the mobile home for a few minutes before exiting as the trailer became fully engulfed in flames. “He did suffer some burns,” Parrish said. “He was removed and sent to the Med Center for treatment.”
While the firefighters were putting the fire out, one of the firefighters was injured by a bullet that came either from the gun or a loose round.
That firefighter turned out to be Hampton Fire Chief Chris Isaacs.
“We got here and pulled the initial attack line and made a defensive attack through the window,” said Hampton Fire Chief Chris Isaacs. “We heard ammunition exploding and I got hit in the chest with a ricochet. That’s 99 percent of the homes in Carter County that we deal with is ammunition in the house.”
Isaacs said he only received a slight scratch from the bullet.
